After 4 years, ICO's terminal is still the largest onshore wind project in Flanders. The wind turbines were designed and installed with the environment in mind. The 11 turbines have a total capacity of 44 MW, which is sufficient to meet the annual energy needs of our terminal.
To manage the wind energy business at our Zeebrugge terminal, we have established the joint venture company ICO Windpark NV, together with Portfineco and ENGIE. Portfineco is a subsidiary of the Port of Zeebrugge and ENGIE is a global leader in carbon-neutral energy and services.
According to Svein Steimler, former president of ICO and ICO Wind Farm, we want to be not only the largest RORO terminal in the world, but also the greenest terminal. We achieve this through initiatives such as the use of wind turbines, solar panels on the PDI centers, water recovery systems for car washing (washing 500 cars with only 20 liters of rainwater), heat pumps for heating buildings, LED lighting for the terminal, EV shuttle cars, and at a later stage shore power for ships.
In the future, NYK Group, as a shareholder of ICO, will consider using the knowledge gained in Zeebrugge at other finished-vehicle logistics terminals operated by NYK Group companies around the world.
